Industry: Pulp and Paper Associated Products: Wear Guard™ Fine Load
Problem:
Augers are precise pieces of equipment that needs to be within specfication in thickness and height to transfer the materials it was intended. the company saw that "hard-facing" the augers saw only a 14 month life expectancy. The "flights" of the auger wear over time from abrasion of the material against the flight walls. In this application the customer hard-faced welded one auger and coated a similiar auger with Devcon's Wear Guard Fine Load. Both augers went into service for 13 months to determine what method worked the best.
Solution:
After thirteen months, the Devcon Wear Guard Fine Load coated auger virtually showed no wear and the hard-faced welded augers showed considerable wear. Measurements were taken to confirm conclusions. Starting at the drive end the four flights of the auger have a starting point of 5/8" or 16mm. The numbers show the wear over the past thirteen months: Hard-Face Flights: 14mm 13mm 9mm 10mm Devcon Coated Flts: 22mm 20mm 21mm 22mmIn In conclusion, hard-faced welded augers must be changed out every 14 months, while the Devcon Wear Guard Fine Load coated augers have still 12 months extended life remaining. Devcon's cost to coat the 12 augers [with a forty-five minute labor rate] was $1,044/each, while hard-facing the augers were $694/each [with a 5-7 hour labor rate]. Saving for the entire project was over $25,000!
